U.S. Open Golf live 2013

The 2013 U.S. Open starts Thursday, and storylines, challenges and possibilities abound at the American national championship. The 113th U.S. Open this week at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., has the potential for plenty of roller-coaster moments.

Tiger Woods is the 9/2 betting favorite to win the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., with the first of four rounds starting.  The second major championship of the year is upon us, and the field is wide open for this year's U.S. Open. While the course for this event will. The 2013 U.S. Open might be his best opportunity in some time to realize his potential for a major championship.U.S. Open picks are everywhere as we hurtle toward the 113th edition of our national championship faster than the grounds crew scrambles. The 113th U.S. Open might well be the most talked-about national championship in many years. Going to a course that hasn't hosted a U.S. But there are a couple reasons why I believe Lefty will contend for the 2013 U.S. Open championship on the final day at Merion Golf Club.

Ahead of the 113th U.S. Open, we highlight 10 things you need to know about the golf tournament.
1: The U.S. Open was first staged in 1895, with Englishman Horace Rawlins winning at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. It was initially played over two rounds, before changing to a 72-hole format in 1898. It was staged over three days (with 36 holes played on the Saturday) until 1965.
2: The 2013 U.S. Open will be staged at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia. Merion was Open host in 1934, 1950, 1971 and 1981. A notable feature of the course is the fact that all pins are accompanied by wicker baskets, instead of flags.
3: The last significant tournament held at Merion was the 2009 Walker Cup, a team event played between the United States and a combined Great Britain and Ireland team. The U.S. won the event 16½ to 9½, with Rickie Fowler starring for the Americans.
4: Merion is a par-70 course, measuring just under 7,000 yards. Just two holes are listed as a par five. The course is known to be one of the shortest in major play. However, wild rough and narrow fairways are sure to challenge players.
5: The U.S. Open is the only remaining men's major that uses an 18-hole playoff after 72 holes. It was last used in 2008 as Tiger Woods edged Rocco Mediate. All men's majors used the 18-hole playoff at stages, but the last time it was in place at another major was the 1989 British Open.
6: The last major Woods won came at the 2008 U.S. Open. After limping through the tournament with knee and leg problems, later diagnosed as stress fractures, he forced an 18-hole playoff after hitting a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th to tie with Mediate. After another 18 holes on Monday, the players could not be separated. Woods clinched the title on the first extra playoff hole. He did not play again in 2008 because of his injuries.
7: Winning any tournament by 15 shots is an outstanding achievement, and is almost unprecedented in majors. But Woods did just that at the 2000 U.S. Open as he coasted to a massive win at Pebble Beach. Woods, who has won 14 majors in all, was the only player to finish with an overall score that was under par as he coasted to a massive win.
8: The 2006 U.S. Open triumph by Australian Geoff Ogilvy will live long in the memory. Experienced campaigners Jim Furyk and Padraig Harrington, who have both won majors, bogeyed the final hole. Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie then produced double-bogeys on the 18th, giving Ogilvy a stunning last-hole win.
9: Woods will enter the 2013 tournament with the most Open wins for a current player. He has three, in 2000, 2002 and 2008. Of the field at the 2013 event, South African Ernie Els — who won in 1994 and 1997 — is the only other multiple winner.
10: Four players have won the U.S. Open on four occasions. Jack Nicklaus (1962, 1967, 1972, 1980) is joined by Ben Hogan (1948, 1950, 1951, 1953) and Bobby Jones (1923, 1926, 1929, 1930) with four victories. Scotsman Willie Anderson (1901, 1903, 1904, 1905) is the other player to have claimed four Open wins. No one has won five time
